⛺️FossoPLAY Den-building Challenge ⛺️ With the impact of COVID-19 upon us, and school and nursery furnishing up today, we wanted to try and do something to help keep little (and big) people active and entertained.
We are social distancing here in Fossoway but that shouldn’t stop us being creative and keeping our minds busy and learning.
Our idea is to promote one of our very favourite activities and all the benefits it brings. Den building is a great activity and one that anyone can do, inside or out!
The benefits:
🌱 Children love it and don’t see it as ‘boring learning’ 🌱Promtes physical activity and develops dexterity and motor skills 🌱Develops problem solving skills and encourages independent learning 🌱Teaches planning/hypothesising and testing theories 🌱Children learn how loads and forces affect structures 🌱Children learn to fail and keep going = ‘growth mindset
That’s just some of the learning before they even start playing in them! 😁
The Challenge, from our family to yours: 🌱Support your children (little and big 👦👧🧔) to design and create their own special den - the more creative the better. 🌱It can be an inside den (perfect if you’re social isolating) or an outside den. 🌱You can use any materials you can think of - the more imaginative the better 🌱Once you’ve built your masterpiece take a picture of it. Then post it on your grid with the hashtag #FossoPLAYdenbuildingchallenge 🌱Finally tag 5 new families and challenge them.

If you have a genuine love of the outdoors and know the difference between your Birch and your Elm, or, more importantly, the difference between leading play and supporting it then we want to here from you 😊
You must be qualified in a related discipline for early learning / early child development practice and have experience of practice in the outdoor environment.

🌧🌧🌧Wet weather planning 😊🌧🌧🌧 For those parents and little play experts coming to visit us tomorrow morning, for our enrolment session, we will be using our indoor space due to the extreme flooding in the Fossoway area. Our main site is still accessible by ‘wellie’, so anyone who’s keen can brave a tour but we’ll be based in our large brick built barn for the session 🏠 ☕️ Teas and coffee available to keep warm and the barn is full of straw bales, pallets, den building materials and other loose parts 👍🏻 #notbadweatherjustscottishweather 😊

Bit of a different look to the site today and the snow brings with it lots of unique ways to explore, develop and learn ... ⛄️ walking in snow, it like walking on sand ... there’s a little more resistance and doing it helps develop muscular strength and gross motor skills ✔️ ⛄️ it can be a little slippy under foot so when little legs take their time to navigate the terrain they develop coordination and balance ✔️ ⛄️ big snow is like covering your garden in the ultimate modelling clay and giving the kids an opportunity to design, build and create anything they can dream of! ✔️ ⛄️ snow provides a fantastic canvass for animals to leave their prints and tracks ... can we identify who’s been to visit the site? I wonder where they went? Let’s follow their track .... ✔️ ⛄️ there’s lots to learn about snow - what’s the difference between water, ice and snow? At what temperature will the snow melt? How does the weather change? ✔️ ⛄️ snow gives us all the opportunity to think strategically when moving it to create paths ... where do we want to move the snow to? Why not over there? Let’s all get our shovels and work as a team ... ✔️ ⛄️ snow is sensory ... it sounds different, it feels different, it looks different ... let’s experience and chat about that ✔️ What are some of the ways you and your children like to experience the snow?
